Age of Empires IV Meta Overview

Landmarks, civs and aggression.

AoE4 expands on AoE2 by introducing landmarks for age‑ups and asymmetric civ design. Aggressive Feudal pushes are more common, but booming and map control remain vital.

Civilisation Archetypes

Some civs like the French and English excel in early knight/longbow pressure. Others like the Chinese and Holy Roman Empire focus on booming and relics. Mongols are mobile and raid‑oriented. Learn your civ’s unique mechanics (dynasties, influence auras) and tailor your build accordingly.

Openings

Feudal aggression with early archer/spear or knight rushes punishes greedy players. Fast Castle is riskier due to stronger Feudal units. Scout your opponent and adapt; always balance eco and army.

Map Considerations

On open maps, walling is harder; Feudal pressure rules. Hybrid maps require water presence and land combos. Closed maps allow greedier builds. Control sacred sites and relics for gold income spikes.
